  • Resource Discovery Network, UK
The Resource Discovery Network is the UK's free national gateway to Internet resources for the learning, teaching and research community. The service currently links to more than 80,000 resources via a series of subject-based information gateways (or hubs). In contrast to search engines, the RDN gathers resources which are carefully selected by subject specialists in our partner institutions. You can search and browse through the resources, and be confident that your results will connect you to Web sites relevant to learning, teaching and research in your subject area.

  • Semantic Grid and Autonomic Computing Programme (UK)
Lying at the core of scientific development is the discovery of new knowledge. The rapid increase in the volume and variety of data inherent within e-Science and mirrored by e-Commerce and e-Government means that any supporting infrastructure must provide a set of semantic services. These core services must be able to equip data with meaning and generate a surrounding semantic context in which data can be meaningfully interpreted. Fundamental research on knowledge systems and services is needed to allow us to move from the current data centric view supporting the grid to a semantic grid with a powerful set of knowledge services. Supported by JISC and the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) in the UK.

  • UK Electronic Libraries Program (eLib)
Managed by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) since 1995, the eLib programme consists of around 60 projects aimed to "transform the use and storage of knowledge in higher education institutions". It is not overtly a research programme; its main remit is to provide a body of tangible, electronic resources and services for UK Higher Education, and to affect a cultural shift towards the acceptance and use of digital resources and services in place of more traditional information storage and access methods. overview of the history and direction of the UK eLib Programme, written for the July/August 1998 issue of D-lib magazine, gives an excellent summary of the whole eLib Programme, and introduces its main themes and concerns, both those behind its creation, and those arising from its development. -->

  • University of Michigan Digital Library Project - University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
The challenges faced are providing an infrastructure that lets patrons (and publishers) feel like they are working within a library, with the traditional emphasis on providing service and organized content, when in fact the underlying space of goods and services is volatile, administratively decentralized, and constantly evolving. UMDL is meeting these challenges by defining and incrementally developing interfaces and infrastructures for users and providers such that intellectual work (finding, creating, and disseminating knowledge) is embedded in a persistent, structured context even though the underlying networked system is evolving. The infrastructure supports extensible ontologies (meta descriptions of collections and services) for allowing components in the digital library to self-organize, dynamically teaming to form structures and services that users need. Principles from economics are also being used to efficiently allocate resources and provide incentives for continual improvement to networked goods and services. This approach enables third parties to join or use UMDL technologies to define and manipulate agents, facilities, and ontologies so that the web of resources grows in an orderly but decentralized way.
